A landmark in Japanese sci-fi animation, this 1995 feature film was directed by Mamoru Oshii.
I first saw it 30 years ago, and I’ve watched it dozens of times since. I never get tired of it. Every time I watch it, I find something new and feel something different. It’s honestly one of my all-time favorite films.
The movie was also a huge hit around the world. The Wachowskis are famously known to have been heavily influenced by this film when they created *The Matrix*.
More recently, Jérémie Périn, director of the animated film *Mars Express*, also said in an interview that this movie really captivated him and had a strong influence on him.
And here’s some exciting news: in November 2026, Mamoru Oshii’s new animated film, *Armored Trooper VOTOMS: The Gray Witch*, is scheduled to be released in Japan.
I can’t wait to see it!
